Venice

Hola,

So our third stop for spring break was Venice (or what we thought would be Venice). When we were looking at hostels in Venice, all of them had bad reviews, so we booked a hotel instead. But what we didn't know was that our hotel was in a little town near Venice, on an island 2 hours away from the main part of Venice. So upon arriving to a cloudy and drizzling Venice, we took a water taxi to the island we were on, where we took a bus to our hotel. Our hotel was in a little town called Moramocco. When we actually arrived, we realized it was more of a bed and breakfast rather than a hotel. Before we realized it was our hotel, I said "This looks like a nice house." I think that about explains it.

The place we were staying gives small town a whole new meeting. We did not see a single person walking around while we were trying to find it, and when we asked the desk worker what there was to do, she said nothing because this is where old people move so they can drink. So we rent bikes (which is something we assume that people don't do very often- they were in the back covered up and didn't look used) from the hotel and rode around. Supposedly there was supposed to be a beach close by so we rode for a while until we lost sight of the shore with still no beach in sight. We decided that following roads into the inner part of the island wouldn't be the best idea since we had no idea how to get anywhere and we didn't speak a bit of Italian. So we turned around and biked the other direction into the actual Venice part of the island.

Even though we had some bike difficulties along the way, we made it. The bike ride there was so beautiful and peaceful. It was refreshing for us after running around all over the place trying to see everything. This way, we got to see what real Italy looks like, not just the commercialized part. Even though it was cold and a little cloudy, riding along the shore and looking out onto the water.

We wanted to walk around town for a bit but by the time we got there it was rainy and cold, so we decided to stop for dinner. We were all craving some pizza so we stopped at a pizzeria. They had so many different types of pizza, I don't know how they thought of some of these things. So of course, what pizza do I try? French fry pizza! That's right, two of the best American things put together for one delicious dinner. I loved it, even though it sounds kind of gross.

After dinner we were going to walk around but it was dark and rainy, and our hotel was a decent bike ride away so we rode back. And we had a tv in our room, which we were very happy about, so we all relaxed and watched some glee dubbed into Italian and other random shows before going to bed early because we were tired.
Late night bike

The next day we got up and had breakfast before heading out to head to the main land of Venice. We got there and walked around near the train station, but we were meeting my cousin Rob (he was visiting a friend there the same time we were there) so I didn't want to wander too far away. We went out to lunch and it was really nice to catch up and meet his friend. Lucky for me, even though we didn't get to see each other for a long time, I get to go see him again this weekend before I return home in a couple of weeks. It's always nice to see some family while I'm here!

After we parted ways, we went and got gelato, then sat on some steps facing a river (or a road in Venice since their rivers are roads) soaking up some sun before our train came. It was a really nice and relaxing, but short time in Venice. I am kind of bummed that we didn't really get to see that much of Venice or stay there longer but I think it as the relaxing kind of day we needed. It was really nice to not really do anything but ride our bikes. I would like to go back some day though and actually spend more time there. That was our short, relaxing trip to Venice. Next stop, Milan!
